An indigenous eCommerce platform is being developed by the government of India. The government’s department for the promotion of Industries and Internal Trade is looking into the development of this platform. With regards to this, A steering committee has been put into place by the government, which will be known as Open Network for Digital Commerce. The primary task of the committee is to take up the responsibility of framing a policy regarding an e-commerce company and setting it. Simultaneously, a policy has to be prepared for eCommerce companies.
Senior DPIIT has been elected as the chairman of the committee, along with representatives of the department of electronics, IT ministry, Ministry of MSME, and NITI Aayog who will be included in the committee of the government eCommerce platform. Other than these representatives, Adil Jainulbhai, Chairman of Quality Council of India, Dilip Asbe, CEO of NPCI Technology, Suresh Seth, CEO of NSDL Technology will also be part of this committee. Also, CAT representatives will be included for industry input. CAT has been opposing foreign eCommerce companies for a long time now.
Right now, Amazon and Flipkart have a majority stake in the Indian eCommerce market. They have been in the game for a long time, setting higher expectations to meet for smaller businesses. But with the arrival of the government e-commerce company, amazon and Flipkart may face some serious competition. The government eCommerce company will play an instrumental role in furthering PM Modi’s Digital India campaign and work in alignment with the vision of the Vocal for Local and Self-Reliant India campaign.
