The festive season is around the corner. Diwali is a festival of lights. And Diya plays an essential role during this season. A popular item made by the locals of Rajasthan. However, given the current scenario, this year with the help of the eCommerce website Khadi Brand, this diyas will be sold online.
#VocalForLocal, a campaign promoted by Prime Minister Modi to make India self-reliant. Thus, during this Diwali, Khadi’s online sale is empowering potters from remote areas of Jaisalmer and Hanumangarh districts in Rajasthan.
Moreover, for the first time, Khadi and Village Industries Commission decided to sell diyas online and through stores to become foo soldiers of the Vocal for Local vision in India. KVIC launched the sale for diyas on October 8 and successfully sold nearly 10,000 diyas online.
A Huge Demand
A huge demand has been seen right from the very first day of their sale. As Diwali is nearing closer, the demand for diyas is rising furthermore. There is a variety of diyas ranging from Rs. 84 to Rs.108 for a set of 12 pieces. Additionally, the website is also offering a 10% discount on the diyas.
KVIC potters stated that approximately earn around Rs. 2 to Rs. 3 on the sale of every diya. Moreover, other than selling diyas, Khadi is also selling items such as Laxmi-Ganesh idols and other decoratives through its outlets in Delhi and other cities. Just like the diyas, idols, too, made by potters in Varanasi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and other states.
This move by Khadi had promoted potters and given them exposure. An exposure that they’ve been looking forward to for a long time. As published on DD News, according to a potter, Madan Lal Prajapati from a unit in Pokharan said, “This is the first time that he is selling diyas beyond the geographical borders of his village.”
Moreover, KVIC provided training to the potters to get started with electric potter wheels. Hands-on training on a few other types of equipment too. All of which is done under the guidance of the Kumhar Sashaktikaran Yojana. Switching to an electric form of pottery has increased their production as well as their income by up to 5 times.
